In order to bring people to a stunning but isolated area of Seljord in southern Norway, the municipality asked Rintala Eggertsson Architects to design a number of shelters next to the town's beautiful lake. "Into the Landscape" is a series of shelters crafted from locally-sourced wood - including a smoke sauna that provides travelers and locals with a warm place from which to admire the divine landscape.
Located on the banks of the beautiful Seljord Lake, the back shelters were raised on stilts with minimal impact on the ground.
They were created as part of a workshop with the help from students and teachers from the Politecnico in Milan and the Norwegian Theatre Academy.
A raised path pierced by trees was built to bring people into the shelters, slowly revealing the beauty hidden behind.
A few bridges, also made from local wood, were placed around them, so people with bikes or wheelchairs can also have access.
Contrasting with the pitch-black color that was used on the outside, the sauna’s wooden interior was left naturally untouched.
Simple and humble, this group of Nordic shelters makes it easier to get into the landscape.
